Reporting “Asre Khodro” quoted from Fars, Peugeot’s decision in February ۲۰۱۲ to cut relations with Iran was made under pressure from the US General Motors.
The decision of the French company also resulted in ۸,۰۰۰ workers losing their jobs.
Some of Peugeot’s employees have expressed their frustration with the company’s move to cut its ties to Iran by going on a hunger strike.
Ahmed Oubakhti, a plant employee, said, “All the workers cannot understand why Peugeot abandoned the Iranian market. If Peugeot would act from an economic point of view instead of a political one, I wouldn’t be here on a hunger strike for thirty seven days trying to save our plant.”
Expressing her concern over the job situation in France, French lawmaker Laurence Sauvage said, “Maybe, the workers in Iran are treated better than France workers because the French government is clearly not very concerned about its labor force.”
Early in February, after losses for French automaker Peugeot-Citroen, workers went on strike for ۲ weeks, protesting layoffs, in Paris suburb of Aulnay-Sous-Bois.
“France’s largest automaker, struggling to compete in Europe’s stagnant car market, is cutting ۸,۰۰۰ jobs and closing the Aulnay-sous-Bois factory,” Euronews stated at the time.
The decision has been taken after the French company has stopped export of automobile spare parts to Iran under pressure from US sanctions.
Peugeot workers’ union representative in France cited halting cooperation with Iran as a major factor bringing loss for the French company.
In the first ۶ month of ۲۰۱۲, Peugeot cut selling of ۲۴۰,۰۰۰ cars compared to that in the same time in ۲۰۱۱. Of ۷۵۰,۰۰۰ job opportunities lost in recent ۱۰ years in French industry sector, ۱۰۰,۰۰۰ were for automaking sector.
According to Peugeot, ۱۰ percent of the company’s products in world markets related to its contracts with Iran’s Iran Khodro industries.
Meanwhile, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s Industries Commission said that Iran’s industry was capable of sidestepping every sanction and walk on the path to development, and definitely the French industry and economy, specially the Peugeot company, would be the real losers of economic sanctions on Iran.
